Weekly Roundup – 5/22/2020

Every week an overwhelming amount of music is released. In Weekly Roundup, we highlight some of the new music that came out over the past seven days that we’re most excited to listen to this weekend (or, if we’re lucky, have heard already).

A BLUEBIRD VACATION | PSYCHIC GRAVEYARD The folks over at Deathbomb Arc never fail to deliver; they’ve brought releases by clipping., JPEGMAFIA and Lana del Rabies into the world. Their newest release is the second album from Psychic Graveyard. I picked up their EP Mouths on Bandcamp day and was instantly struck by it. The tracks were chaotic and noisy while still managing to get stuck deep in the recesses of my brain. If that was any indication this new one will be a banger.

NAO FALES NELA QUE A MENTES | NIDIA Principe has released some of the most interesting experimental electronic music of the past decade. Based in Lisbon, they focus on bringing the sounds of their local scene to the world. Nidia is one of my favorite artists on a roster filled with amazing producers. The few tracks I’ve heard from this release are atmospheric and playful, and I can’t wait to dig into the whole thing.

PERFECTLY IMPERFECT AT THE RYMAN | MARGO PRICE If not for the pandemic, we’d already have a new Margo Price album in our hands. She delayed her forthcoming album That’s How Rumors Get Started (originally slated for a mid May release) as the shutdowns began. This week she gifted us with this live album, which also features guest spots from Sturgill Simpson, Emmylou Harris and Jack White. It’s just what we need to tide us over as we wait eagerly await her new album.

THE EIGHTEENTH DAY OF MAY | S/T RETROSPECTIVE The Eighteenth Day of May were a six piece UK based band who created some of the finest, subtly psychedelic English folk music you’ll hear. Active in the early aughts, they released one album before calling it quits. This retrospective by the folks over at Cardinal Fuzz and Feeding Tube collects that album as well as recordings from the sessions for their scrapped second album. To my ears, this can hold its own with the best of artists like Fairport Convention or Steeleye Span.

ACQUIESCE | TALSOUNDS TALSounds is the solo project of Natalie Chami, who also makes music as part of groups like Good Willsmith. Previous releases under this moniker have been lush ambient soundscapes that sometimes choose to flirt with pop music structures. I haven’t heard anything from this latest release (put out by NNA Tapes, another all time favorite label), but I can’t wait to dig in this weekend.
