Resources

Here at undrcurrents, we’ve spent way too much of our lives seeking out new music. As a result, we’ve found a ton of places all over the web where we can discover music. This is meant as a jumping off place for you to start finding things beyond what we can cover on the site. We’ll be adding to this list over time.

  • Forced Exposure : Once a zine, now a record distributor. Come for the selection and editorials
  • Low Company : Record store in the UK. Check out their recommendations if you’re feeling adventurous.
  • Mutant Sounds : Now defunct mp3 blog from a previous era. Still lots of amazing music to seek out in their archives, many of which have made their way onto streaming services. Also check out their monthly radio show on dublab
  • NTS : Adventurous radio programming from all over the map
  • WFMU : An institution. Also check out the now defunct Beware of the Blog
  • Rateyourmusic : User ratings of everything under the sun. The lists feature is an amazing way to find interesting new sounds
  • Aquarium Drunkard : Tunes that my dad and I can agree on.
  • Stranded : Record store in LA and NY, come for the curation and recommendations
  • Terminal Boredom : Now defunct website. Used to cover all things underground punk, but their forums still have great recommendations from connoisseurs of the genre
  • Raven Sings the Blues : Nice reviews for the alt-rock crowd.
  • Post-Trash : Foremost coverer of all things happening in the indie underground.
  • Passion of the Weiss : Cool site, I like the column about UK drill (which is hard to find any coverage of)
  • Loud and Quiet : Coverage of lots of stuff from the other side of the pond
  • The Quietus : Look no further for the best year end lists anywhere
  • The Wire : Legendary publication for experimental music. Pick up a paper copy (or a subscription) while you’re here
  • Listen To This : Blog that examines older, obscure releases. Lots of cool albums to be found in the archives, and they’ve recently starting posting after a long hiatus! Also check out their NTS radio show
  • Fond/Sound : Lots of obscure art rock and ambient music to be found here. Album profiles often include downloads, which is great for hard to find albums that sound like they shouldn’t be missed
  • Die or D.I.Y. : Obscure DIY rock and punk, complete with downloads. One of the few reliable mp3 blogs left
  • Blog of Roland : Loosely associated with Siltbreeze Records and run by head honcho Tom Lax (we think), lots of interesting albums reviewed that don’t get mainstream coverage + artist interviews.
  • Yellow Green Red : Monthly drops of album reviews, all well worth checking out
  • Still Single : now converted to an email newsletter, you can still find the years of archives of Doug Mosurock’s reviews on its original Tumblr home
  • Fucking Record Reviews : most notable for their year end lists, they’ll also occasionally post old Zine reviews of albums
  • Tinymixtapes : Gone but not forgotten, some of the best experimental music coverage out there.
  • Tone Glow: Long form interviews with downloads of obscure releases and reviews.
